What is Acaí?

Have you been hearing about the food acaí lately but have no idea what it is or how to say it? Acaí (ah-sigh-ee) is a berry harvested from acaí palm trees in the Amazon and is rich in antioxidants, much like a blueberry. While this berry has been popular in California for a number of years, it is quickly growing in popularity on the east coast, and for good reason!

There are a number of health benefits from the acaí berry, but a few of these benefits include anti-inflammatory effects, healthy skin, and a healthy heart. A diet consisting of antioxidant rich foods like acaí and a colorful plate is extremely important for a healthy body.

Acaí bowls and acai juice are the most common ways to enjoy acaí. Acaí bowls can be blended with apple juice, milk, almond milk, coconut milk, and just about any liquid base, like a smoothie. You can then top the ‘smoothie’ part with bananas, strawberries, blueberries, mango, granola, almond butter, coconut, and again, just about anything you’d like to add. The only difference between a smoothie and an acai bowl is that the acaí bowl’s consistency is much thicker. A great advantage to acai bowls are the customization of each one and the amount of protein and healthy foods you can take in, in just one sitting. Since acai bowls are served cold, it is the perfect warm weather meal, keeping you cool, refreshed, and ready for the day.
